World Map by Frederick De Wit (1670 circa). This large map is the work of a 17th century famous editor of atlases, Frederik De Wit who reached the peak of his career with the production of large mural maps amongst which this “Nova Totius Terrarium Orbis Tabula”, which dates back to 1670 and is one of the most significant examples. Originally realized with copper- engraving it is made with a number of sheets which are mounted onto a removable cloth to make transport easier. On the four corners there are illustrations of various far away peoples , animals and plants. Between New Zealand and the Strait of Magellan there is a chart with distances. There is also a sphere representing the movement of the planets according to the Ptolemaic hypothesis. An original of this map is included in the collection of maps at the Istituto Geografico Militare di Firenze. Our reproduction has been realized according to the techniques common to all our maps
